How many Years of Experience Required for New Zealand Migration?

New zealand Immigration

New Zealand is one of the most beautiful, pleasant, and prosperous countries across the globe. The country offers several career opportunities across various business domains and welcomes thousands of immigrants annually. However, New Zealand has a specific way of recognizing skilled work experience for skilled migrant visas. Apex Visas, the leading New Zealand immigration consultant, talks more about it.

In case you have claimed points for your work experience in your expression of interest for a skilled migrant visa, you must show that you possess the required number of years of experience. Accordingly, New Zealand recognizes skilled work experience in two ways. Your experience can be in,

  • The same occupation in which you have claimed skilled employment points, or,
  • A different occupation at skill levels 1, 2, or 3 on the Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZSCO)

You must show that you had the required qualification before you began the work experience.

Work Experience in a Profession at Skill Level 1, 2, or 3 on the ANZSCO List

The work you’ve done must,

  • Mostly match the ANZSCO description for that profession
  • Have commenced after completing the ANZSCO qualification or the required work experience.

Now, what if you do not have the qualification listed in ANZSCO for your occupation? In this case, you can substitute the qualification with the relevant work experience. You must check your occupation in ANZSCO to determine the number of years of relevant work experience required to replace the qualification.

If your occupation is at Skill Level 1, you can substitute five years of relevant work experience for ANZSCO qualification, even if it isn’t stated in it. In case you do not qualify for points for skilled employment, the work you’ve done should also have been gained in an area of complete skill shortage or a comparable labor market.

In the latter case, you should have been a citizen or the country’s permanent resident where you worked or legally allowed to work in that country.

Work Experience not in an ANZSCO Skill Level 1, 2, or 3 Occupation

The work you’ve done should have been in the same occupation for which you have claimed skilled employment points. This applies to work experience in an ANZSCO skill level 4 or 5 occupations, considered an exception. You should qualify for the skilled employment points and fulfill one of the below requirements.

  • Completed three years of relevant work experience
  • Complete a relevant recognized qualification at or above an NZQF level-4 certificate
  • Met the requirement of the occupation, in case it is on Long Term Skill Shortage List
  • Completed a relevant recognized NZQF level-3 qualification on the List of Qualifications Exempt from Assessment
  • You held registration for the job, in case it requires to be registered in New Zealand
